This wonderful new adaptation of Carlo Collodi’s 1883 novel, the Adventures of Pinocchio , is beautifully recreated using stop-motion animation and amazing special effects.
Guillermo chooses to set his story during the rise of Fascism in Italy’s Mussolini where we find a grief stricken Geppetto (David Bradley) still mourning the tragic loss of his beloved son years earlier during WW1.
In a fit of drunken rage he chops down an oak tree on his land and pulls it to his workshop and starts carving before falling asleep. It is then that the majestic spirit of life (Tilda Swinton) appears and brings the wooden boy into being.
Geppetto, flawed in many ways tries to raise the perfect son but Pinocchio refuses to accept the status quo and takes us on an incredible journey of what it means to question our realities and strive to be your own person. Voiced perfectly by Gregory Mann with Ewan McGregor as a very dapper and entertaining Sebastien Cricket we watch how the adventures of Pinocchio not only teach him how to be human but also show Geppetto how to be a real Father.
A glorious visual feast and fitting tribute to the late Mark Gustafson.
